2020 APIL Annual Conference on Abuse in association with ACAL
Vanessa Jane Davies was delighted to be invited by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) in conjunction with the Association of Child Abuse Lawyers (ACAL) to speak at their prestigious annual conference on abuse. Sadly Covid 19 prevented the day being held in person but thanks to the power of video conferencing this important and thought-provoking conference went ahead.
Joining a panel of six high profile speakers drawn from the legal, therapeutic and academic worlds, Vanessa was asked to speak about the Impact of Self-Harm and Scarring.
Vanessa’s presentation talked about how, together with scar management therapies, effective medical skin camouflage (MSC) can support individuals who have experienced self-harm by minimising the appearance and impact of their scars, both physically and emotionally. With decades of clinical experience to draw upon, Vanessa engaged the Conference delegates with ‘before and after’ images and patient stories.
The presentation concluded with an incredibly powerful video provided by one of Vanessa’s long-standing Skin Camouflage Services patients. Natasha was in her late teens when Vanessa first saw her in Harley Street having been referred as part of Court proceedings. When Vanessa asked for permission to use some of her ‘before and after’ images (anonymised) in her presentation, Natasha suggested she spoke to the Conference about the life experiences that led her to self-harm and how, along with professional therapeutic help, medical skin camouflage has given her choice about her appearance and helped her move on with her life after self-harm...We were humbled to hear her story.

Featured in: International Therapist. Summer 2020. Issue 133
Vanessa and Emma Holly from Restore Therapy both members of the Federation of Holistic Therapists are delighted to feature in this 3-page article about their unique collaboration together which reflects their approach to professional practice.
Having trained in ScarWork™ herself, Vanessa became the only skin camouflage expert in the UK qualified to provide Scar Work™ therapy.
Vanessa is very proud to have Emma on board at her Harley Street Practice and says ‘it made absolute sense for us to work together in this way. Whilst I am qualified to offer ScarWork™ my primary expertise is in Skin Camouflage, just as Emma’s consummate expertise is in scar therapy. In my experience, if you want to give your patients the best, the practitioner should be a specialist in their field, rather than having some experience of many things.'

Vanessa Visits The British Forces
Vanessa Jane Davies was invited to commence a programme of skin camouflage training for The British Army in Manchester. A group of Medical Officers and Combat Medical Technicians were keen to learn the benefits of how skin camouflage can assist soldiers in their recovery and rehabilitation.
A Senior Medical Officer commented "Skin Camouflage is a therapy that can significantly improve the appearance of a disfigurement of a serviceman or servicewoman due to a medical condition or an injury. It not only improves the physical appearance of those affected but can have huge benefits in alleviating the negative psychological impact these disfigurements can have on both the service personnel and their families."
The session was very well received and further training will continue. A nominated medic will provide the skin camouflage service to the Army Personnel and operate from their base. Vanessa will provide ongoing support and mentoring as well as all the necessary documents to implement patient care.
A presentation then followed in the afternoon by a Consultant in Pain Medicine. Burns management and pain control were discussed and played a key role underpinning the soldiers learning.
